Career Scope After MBBS

An MBBS degree provides the fundamental qualification for a medical career, leading to several professional paths:

  1. Clinical Practice (General Physician): Working as a Medical Officer or General Practitioner in government or private hospitals/clinics.

  2. Postgraduate Specialization: The most common path is pursuing a postgraduate degree (MD – Doctor of Medicine or MS – Master of Surgery) by clearing the NEET-PG exam, which leads to specialization in areas like Cardiology, Pediatrics, General Surgery, etc.

  3. Non-Clinical Roles: Careers in Medical Research, Hospital Administration (MBA), Public Health (MPH), Health Informatics, or Medical Writing/Journalism

šŸ“š Curriculum Phases (4.5 Years Academic)

The curriculum follows a competency-based medical education (CBME) model, divided into three phases:

1. Pre-Clinical Phase (Approx. 1 Year)

Focuses on the basic, normal structure and function of the human body.

  • Subjects: Anatomy (including Gross Anatomy, Embryology), Physiology, and Biochemistry.

2. Para-Clinical Phase (Approx. 1.5 Years)

Focuses on the causes, mechanisms, and treatment principles of diseases, bridging basic science with clinical practice.

  • Subjects: Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine, and Community Medicine (Public Health).

  • Training: Students begin brief clinical postings (rotations in hospital outpatient departments).

3. Clinical Phase (Approx. 2 Years)

Involves intensive study of all clinical specialties and hands-on patient management training.

  • Core Subjects: General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics.

  • Allied Subjects: Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology (Eye), Otorhinolaryngology (ENT), Dermatology, Psychiatry, etc.

  • Training: Extensive hospital clinical rotations and bedside learning.

After the 4.5 years of academic study, students must complete a mandatory one-year rotating internship (CRMI).

  • Goal: To gain practical, hands-on clinical experience by rotating through all major hospital departments (Medicine, Surgery, OBG, etc.) under the supervision of experienced doctors.

  • Licensure: Only upon successful completion of the academic course and the compulsory internship is the graduate granted the degree and eligible to register as a licensed medical practitioner (Doctor).
